Real Wedding story: 5 ways to give your wedding a Mexican theme! Ariba!

Updated: Jun 12, 2020

Back in November last year, we managed a wedding alongside the amazing caterers Portfolio Events, at the beautiful Dodmoor House in Northamptonshire. Not only was this wedding a rustic, barn style, winter wedding but it also had an amazing Mexican theme! If you are thinking of adding a theme to your day and love the idea of a Mexican theme – maybe you got engaged in Mexico, or it is your favourite place to holiday together, have you thought about a destination Wedding in Mexico but relatives can't travel, or maybe you are just a fun-loving couple who love tacos (!) then we have some great ideas for you to bring 'la fiesta' to your day!

Table Décor

To bring the Mexican theme into the barn, the couple added a rainbow of colours to their table décor which really bought a bright feel to their winter day. They also used various cacti and sugar skulls across the tables for the wedding breakfast, and bought the bright colours into the flowers displayed in mismatched vases, even using a pineapple as a vase! How Mexican!

Each table was numbered in Spanish which is the language spoken in Mexico, again on a variety of coloured card.

You can see the traditional décor of flowers and candles is still present, but with a Mexican twist. This shows that you can bring a subtle theme to your wedding or go all out as this couple have!

Favours are such a great way to bring a theme, especially if you just want a subtle hint, I would also suggest theming the favours first.

For a Mexican theme, you can use shots of tequila as at this countryside Wedding, or even hot sauce as another couple used for their Mexican inspired New York Wedding.

You can’t go wrong with either of these options as guests will most definitely make sure they are used!

Food and Drinks

The best part of a Mexican themed wedding has to be the food! This couple opted for a sharing nacho starter, a chilli main and yes….churros for dessert with dipping sauces! There were even Mexican inspired canapes prior to the wedding breakfast which looked great on wooden boards.

For the evening, buffet style fajitas, meat and vegetarian, were available for all of the guests.

For drinks…tequila, tequila, tequila! We mentioned previously about using shots of tequila as a wedding favour, you could also offer shots of tequila during your arrival drinks post ceremony, or if you think this is a bit much, you could have them as an evening arrival drink. Think about using a Mexican beer, Corona, or cocktail such as a paloma for your arrival drinks.

The Mexican Mariachi is perfect to entertain your guests, and are widely available, even within the UK. This couples guests absolutely loved the themed band, it’s something different and gets the guests in the mood for dancing! This style of band are great for getting guests involved as they will mingle within the crowd.

For the children (well, to be honest, us adults would even love this!) a pinata is a must and makes amazing photographs!

This couple even had a sugar skull face painter during the evening – everybody looked amazing!

Your cake is another great way to theme your day, one of my tips for couples to bring your personality to your cake topper; there are so many great creative people out there who can create a bespoke cake topped for you. The cake topper at this wedding went above and beyond any others I have seen before! Amazing!

For the flavour of your cake, there are so many options out there nowadays! Tequila and lime or chocolate chilli would definitely work well!
